Data Engineer

Phoenix, AZ
The Opportunity: We are seeking a Data Engineer / Database Administrator to manage and optimize our client’s data lake environment built on Microsoft SQL Server. This role is responsible for integrating data from multiple sources, designing and executing complex SQL queries, and ensuring data is structured for efficient access, reporting, and business use. The ideal candidate has strong experience working with large datasets, ETL workflows, and data warehousing environments.

  • Project Duration: 12+ Months Contract

Key Responsibilities
Data Lake & Database Administration
  • Manage and maintain a SQL Server-based data lake environment.
  • Ensure data integrity, performance tuning, and overall database health.
ETL & Data Integration
  • Design and execute SQL queries to integrate diverse data sources.
  • Normalize and transform legacy datasets to improve reporting and analytics capabilities.
  • Support ongoing data ingestion and processing workflows.
Data Quality & Governance
  • Validate and monitor data accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
  • Implement data governance standards and documentation practices.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with business and product stakeholders to gather requirements and support solution delivery.
  • Respond to change requests, troubleshoot issues, and provide operational support.

Required Skills & Experience
Technical Experience
  • Extensive hands-on experience with SQL, ideally in a Microsoft SQL Server environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of ETL pipelines and data warehouse structures.
  • Experience managing and manipulating large datasets.
Analytical & Reporting Skills
  • Ability to analyze data trends and translate findings into actionable insights.
  • Demonstrated experience developing clear reports and dashboards.
Problem-Solving
  • Strong critical thinking, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis capabilities.
Preferred Tools & Competencies
  • Python or PowerShell scripting experience
  • SQL Server administration expertise
  • Data modeling and performance tuning
  • SQL development certifications (preferred but not required)
